GTA 5’s Source Code Out and About on GitHub and the Internet!
After a few days of wondering and speculation about the massive scandal and hack fronted by hacker and GTAForums user Tea Pot, it appears that the source code for GTA 5 has most certainly been compromised. It was last week that nearly 90 videos containing the pre-alpha build footage for GTA 6 surfaced on the internet. Claims from the hacker and subsequent impersonators have implied that both the GTA 5 and 6 source code were stolen during the Rockstar Games hack that took place via a bit of social hacking. An employee was coaxed into giving their login and user information for Rockstar’s GTA 6 development Slack group. So far, it seems that significant portions of the GTA 5 source code have been compromised and for now, there’s no sign or evidence of GTA 6’s code appearing on the internet. The situation is certainly pretty hard to wrap your head around and verifying claims is different. Every day, new accounts pop up on user forums and Twitter claiming to be the elusive hacker behind it all. In private dialogues and conversations, several modders, developers, and hackers have stated that if these files are indeed legitimate, they could potentially pose a big threat to the networks and security of GTA 5, GTA Online, and GTA 6. To further add to the story, a GitHub user by the name 100ksource posted a new push request that contains more previously unseen code, which means that the hacker or hacker group has outed the source code to multiple individuals. One person even went so far as to claim that there’s a reasonable degree of certainty that the claims are indeed real. But it’s only possible to verify if Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive verify the claims in regards to the source code but that won’t be happening any time soon. But in other news, Rockstar Games has stated that there won’t be any huge issues in the development of GTA 6 in the grand scheme of things. We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way. It was verified a few hours ago that the original account on the forum was being operated by two independent users. Although this isn’t a significant update, it does suggest that the hacker did not carry out the hack and the grand leak on their own. Rather, the finger points to the hacker group Lapsus$ and the claims that the group was behind it all could indeed be legitimate. If that is certainly the case, the controversial files and source code could pop up on the internet at any given moment, regardless of the fact if the original hacker is caught or not. Whether the source code is leaked out onto the internet or to private individuals, it could very well have disastrous consequences for the games in question. It’s the equivalent of leaving your door wide open and putting up a sign to do whatever anyone wants. We have seen Telegram screenshots of messages posted by “Lily” showing delay tactics and false information about the GTAF account, and without any activity on the account since Sunday, at this point we have no reason to believe “Lily” currently possesses any of the hacked materials they claim to hold. We strongly advise against clicking, sharing, or downloading anything “Lily” or anyone else posts in the Telegram group. TL;DR We believe that: “Teapot” and “Lily” worked together and both accessed the account on GTAForums “Teapot” made the posts regarding hacked materials, “Lily” made the posts regarding a new Telegram account The account has not been accessed since Sunday evening We have no reason to believe “Lily” is in possession of any hacked materials at this moment in time We locked the other thread regarding this to minimize misinformation – GTA Forums But it’s not only Rockstar and Take-Two that have been affected, the commuting company, Uber claims that the hacking group Laspsus$ is behind all of these attacks. Lapsus$ has made quite the name for themselves as they’ve come forward as the entity behind the fiascos surrounding information being compromised from large corporations the likes of Samsung, Nvidia, and Microsoft. Uber states that the company is working closely with the FBI and the US Department of Justice and will continue to support their efforts.
